The Chairman of the Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information Mykola Tomenko stressed that monitoring of laws implementation in the sphere of media is among the priority tasks of the Committee. He found it necessary to create a productive system of Public Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, which could fully satisfy the needs of society in operational information, pluralistic broadcasting, in view of national traditions, moral and ethical principles of the Ukrainian people.

 

Mykola Tomenko drew public attention to the fact that Ukrainian television is overloaded with alcohol and tobacco advertising. He considers that such advertising, according to the Law “On Advertising”, “cannot form an opinion that smoking and alcohol consumption are important factors in reaching success”.    

 

People’s deputy told about his legislative activity, stressing that it is not limited media sphere only. In particular, M.Tomenko said the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Spirituality has received five draft resolutions on commemorating anniversaries of Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, Anton Makarenko, Semen Hulak-Artemovskyi, Vasyl Svyda and Yevhen Petrushevych (Reg. No. 1065-1069), under his co-authorship. 

 

The Chairman of the subcommittee on TV and radio broadcasting Mykola Knyazhytsktyi noted that the main tasks of the subcommittee are creation of high-quality media product and introduction of public television.

 

M.Knyazhytskyi told also about the directions in reforming domestic media space.

 

According to the speaker, in order to clarify the activity of Ukrainian broadcasters and providers and introduce additional guarantees of freedom of speech, Mykola Tomenko jointly with him developed a bill on amendments to several laws of Ukraine concerning transparency of media ownership and implementation of the principles of state policy in the sphere of television and radio broadcasting (Reg. No. 2074).
